Children’s programming at the Griffin Theatre brings young people original productions of award-winning contemporary children’s literature. All world premieres—the work specifically speaks to young people and is reflected in the plays chosen. Instead of the “fairy tale” shows produced frequently at other theatre companies the Griffin chooses to present plays that, although all works of fiction, reflect the life, experiences, trials and tribulations of the children in the audience. Productions over the last twenty years have included the world premieres of The Whipping Boy, Sleeping Ugly, The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates, Frindle, Catherine Called Birdy, Romeo and Juliet are Alive and Well and Living in Maple Bend, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The Flying Trunk. The fast growing touring company brings these same shows to children throughout the Chicago area and nationally. Past partnerships with the Chicago Public Library and the Chicago Children’s Museum have brought free performances of these plays to Chicago Public school children. Additionally, the Griffin has brought it’s repertory of plays for young audiences to the Metropolis Center for the Performing Arts in Arlington Heights.
